THE BRIDGES

Almost every day I would pass the old gas tower in Kings Cross, a monument to decorative Victorian Ironwork with its confident form and giant rivets. I tried to photograph it and turn the imagery into something but although it had gravity it didn’t function as a design that I could describe as ‘useful’. Traveling in the north of England I went over a similarly made Victorian bridge and this gave me the idea of using this strong form for expressing a voyage or a connection from one place to another. Using photographs of this bridge I created a light at the end of the tunnel encouraging one’s mind to move. At the same time, the ironwork was extremely solid and this gave the design an ‘earth’ which made the viewer feel strong and secure without feeling imprisoned.
