THE MECHANICS

The first of three commissions by Paul “Rip” Stone and Mr. C of Plink Plonk Records for the club nights Vapourspace at Turnmills and Flavour at The End. The music was experimental electronica, slower and more minimal than other dance floors, sensual, deep, interesting, and psychedelic. I always had a love of blueprints as, like x-rays, they showed the secret inner workings of things. Mysterious, and somehow glowing with a blue luminescence they also appear to have a spiritual dimension. Plink Plonk carried artists whose music was also stripped back and had a mystery to it but it also had a deep, sensual, driving force to it, and this ‘drive’ led me to ‘engines’ and more specifically to drive shafts and pistons which have a sexual dimension. The combination of blueprints, pistons, and mirroring, created a stripped back psychedelia that had strength and movement and worked well on dance floors, as well as in chill out rooms.
